Resources Revisited: Assessment Practices for the End of Semester

by Nicole States, Instructional Developer, Reinert Center

The Resources Revisited series highlights existing resources available to the SLU community that may be especially timely or useful at certain points in the academic year.

As the end of the semester approaches, final projects, assignments and exams are being planned, finalized or just getting started. Now can be a good time to revisit what makes assessments work well, not just for measuring student learning, but for supporting it. Luckily, the Reinert Center has a diverse set of resources no matter what your final assessment strategies may be.

For general guides on assessment, check out Assessment in Diverse Classrooms, Creating Inclusive Course Assignments, or Prioritizing Exam Integrity among International Students, that address how to design assessments while considering varied student experiences and backgrounds. If you are wrapping up an asynchronous course, Alternative Summative Assessments in Asynchronous Distance offers ideas for end-of-term assessments that go beyond traditional exams.

If you want to refine the alignment between your final assessment and in class learning, consider reviewing the guide on Grounding Assessment in Course Experience. And if you are still finishing an assignment prompt or description, this blog post on Transparent Assignments provides a practical framework for making expectations clear to students.

If you are looking to provide effective feedback consider reviewing Using the Canvas Media Tool for Student Feedback, Five Resources on Responding to Written Work from English Language Learners. Faculty in clinical or applied settings may find Constructive Feedback in a Clinical Setting helpful as well.

As always, we invite you to explore our full catalogue of resources on the Reinert Center website. If you would like personalized support, we are happy to meet with you for a one-on-one consultation in person or via Zoom.
