Resources Revisited: Assessing Students Mid-Semester

by Beth Petitjean, Digital Learning Specialist, Reinert Center

Welcome to the Reinert Center’s new feature, Resources Revisited. This series highlights existing resources available to the SLU community that may be especially timely or useful at certain points in the academic year.

It’s October. That time of year when pumpkin spice is everywhere and mid-semester assessments are looming on the horizon, casting shadows like candles in jack-o-lanterns. No need to be frightened, though. Here at the Reinert Center, we aim to provide some treats in the form of Resource Guides to help you plan for upcoming tests, exams, and essays.

For general assessment tips, see Grounding Assessment in Course Experiences, Assessment in Diverse Classrooms, and Creating Inclusive Course Assignments.

Although Prioritizing Exam Integrity among International Students and Designing Exams for International Students focus on a specific demographic of students, you’ll find many helpful suggestions that can apply to all students.

If you’re considering a student group project as a mid-semester assessment, there are many suggestions in Effective Group Work, Collaborative Learning in the Classroom, and Considerations for Student Group Activities and Assignments.

For those teaching distance courses, consider the suggestions in Alternative Summative Assessments in Asynchronous Distance Learning Courses and Considerations for Student Peer Reviews as an Assignment.

As always, we invite you to explore the full range of resources offered on the Reinert Center website. And if you’d like more personalized support, we’re happy to meet with you for a one-on-one consultation in-person or via Zoom. Feel free to request a teaching consultation to discuss your course materials—or any other teaching topic.
